Comprehensive psychiatric assessment

Every patient at Newpoint starts here. In a comprehensive psychiatric assessment, we take your full history, get a clear picture of what brought you in, and finish with a diagnosis and a treatment plan built around it. Everything else builds on this visit.

What the assessment covers

The assessment follows a set structure, not just a conversation, so nothing important gets missed. We go through your history and current symptoms and look for the risk factors that may be affecting your mental health — the things that make a condition harder to manage or easier to miss. If you were referred for a psychiatric evaluation, this is the same appointment. We just call it an assessment.

The tools we use

Along with the conversation, we use a few structured tools. They give us a baseline to measure against later, so we can tell real progress from a good week.

  • A comprehensive psychiatric assessment questionnaire
  • Standardized clinical rating scales, recorded at baseline
  • Screening tests, both to identify conditions and to rule others out

Reaching a diagnosis

We reach a diagnosis through assessment, not assumption. We’ll tell you what we found and what it means, in plain language. If the picture isn’t clear yet, we’ll say so instead of reaching for a label that might not fit.

When we can make a diagnosis, the rest of your care is built on it.

Your treatment plan

Where both are indicated, your plan combines psychotherapy approaches and psychopharmacology, matched to your diagnosis and your situation. If other clinicians are already part of your care, we work with them to set your therapy and medication plan together, not in parallel.

We revisit the plan as we see how you respond to treatment, and we keep offering support and education as needed.

  • Medication, when it’s indicated
  • Individual counseling
  • Referrals to follow-up services for anything outside what we provide

What happens after

The plan isn’t the end of it. We keep checking your progress and offer support and education as you go. Follow-up care is usually medication management, in person or by telehealth.
